A sodium/potassium pump builds up a concentration of sodium outside the cell and potassium inside the cell through active transport and the use of ATP. The sodium outside of the cell can then latch onto the large glucose molecules and help it to punch through the cell wall through passive transport. Glucose would not normally be able to move through the cell wall, but since such a large gradient of sodium has been built up, it is possible.
