Is there a way to reset the code on my overhead door keypad if i don't know the old one?

my friend's parents bought a house to rent out and i live there during school. everybody else has a garage door opener because we got 2 with the house but i don't have one so i have to walk all the way around the house to go inside everyday. no one else cares because they don't have to worry about it but i'm sick of it. there is an overhead door keypad next to the door but i'm not sure if it works anymore and i don't know what the code for it is. is there a way to reset it? is there a way to program a new remote if i buy one at lowes? please help, this is so frustratingggggg
